Pottery Courses
Have a Holiday with a difference
Hundred-aker-wood pottery in conjunction with the new
Portland Arts Centre offers pottery experience holidays throughout 2010
on the fascinating Isle of Portland, the home of the 2012 Olympic
sailing events.
For the complete beginner or the more experience potter,
we can provide a memorable activity holiday at our workshop at the
newly established Portland Arts Centre in Fortuneswell, Isle of
Portland overlooking the famous 17 mile Chesil beach and the Sailing
Academy where during the summer of 2012 they will be playing host to
the biggest water sports event in the world.
Our non residential courses range from 2 or 3 day
weekends to 4 or 6 day courses where there is a opportunity for you to
push the boundaries. All the courses are done with fun and enjoyment as
a major factor. You can go as far as you wish with your learning, David
the potter will be permanently on hand to show you individually all the
skills required to produce your first piece of pottery on the wheel or
handbuild through to the firings and glazings. At the end of the
course, any pieces finished will be ready to take home with you but if
not then they will be safely sent to your home address.

Courses
For our 2 or 3 day courses, depending on your potting
experience we would aim to teach and run through different stages of
throwing, practising as we go techniques such as the gearstick descent,
Five o'clock pinch, six to twelve push, all tried and tested methods to
bring about a rapid improvement in your throwing skills. There will be
no pressure on yourselves timewise and you will be encouraged to keep
practising with no worrying about what clay you use. Ideally finished
pots will be dried enough to turn. On these short courses the finished
pots will be sent on to your home address when glaze fired. On the 3
day course you will have the chance to glaze a pot to have Raku fired
before you go home.
For our longer 4 day course you will be able to progress
a little bit further with your practice and again on the last day a
raku firing will take place.
Our 6 day course will take you through the process of throwing a series
of pots, turning when leather hard and having them biscuit fired prior
to glazing them on the last day. Again on the last day of the course
there will be an opportunity to participate in a raku firing from which
you will be able to take home your finished pots. All stoneware glazed
pottery will be forwarded on to your home address if not able to finish
firing before departure.
With all the courses we aim to remain flexible so that if you wish to
take in some sightseeing on any particular day we will work within your
schedule.
During all 2/3/4/6 day courses tea and coffee refreshments will be
served throughout the day and a light lunch will be included.
On many days in the Summer I will be running one day
workshops/taster sessions. These will be suitable to give someone a
experience of working with clay either on the wheel or handbuild.
All courses and workshops are limited to 6 people to enable individual
attention to be given to each person.
